Andrew Bernish, AICP, GISP
Senior GIS Specialist & Transportation Planner
Mr. Bernish is a Senior Transportation Planner and GIS Analyst with KFH Group, currently assigned to the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) where he has served as lead cartographer and GIS analyst for all transportation units and modes within the Secretary of Transportation’s office since 2017. He holds dual certifications as an American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) and a Certified GIS Professional (GISP). His cartography has been recognized with a Special Achievement in GIS award by ESRI in 2019 and as a winner in the first annual ArcGIS for Adobe Creative Cloud maps competition in 2020.
In his role at MDOT, Mr. Bernish serves as GIS liaison between the Transportation Secretary’s office and the MD State Geographic Information Committee (MSGIC) and the MD iMap working committee, and provides full GIS analyses for multiple business units including Real Estate and Economic Development, Active Transportation and Micromobility, Freight and Rail, Environmental and Water Quality, Archeology, and Asset Management. He has developed over 100 interactive web applications, maps, and data dashboards for MDOT’s various business offices, and maintains the Office of Planning and Capital Programming’s website using SharePoint, HTML, and JavaScript.
Mr. Bernish serves on the faculty at George Washington University’s Sustainable Urban Planning Graduate Department, where he teaches “Principles of Sustainable Urban Planning” and “GIS in Planning” and has co-led international studio planning courses in South Korea, Kazakhstan, and Bangladesh. He successfully led the program’s APA accreditation initiative, granted in 2017. He also teaches “Web GIS for Urban Planners” at the University of Maryland’s Urban Studies and Planning Graduate School (College Park). Mr. Bernish serves as webmaster and board member for the Maryland Chapter of the American Planning Association, and sits on the boards of Talbot Thrive and the MD Eastern Shore Trail Network, both of which advocate for bicycle and pedestrian access across Maryland’s Eastern Shore. He is a former U.S. Peace Corps volunteer who served in South Africa’s Education and Community Resource Program.
